The Department of Fine Arts newly formed in autumn 2015, relying on the great tradition of training teachers of drawing in Eger, moved towards the direction of training artists but it continues to transfer knowledge related to and offering broader frames to art dissemination. After a one-year initial training students can choose between two major specialisations (painter or graphic designer) and a minor specialisation (environmental art).
In the specialisation in painting and graphic design, a high quality theoretical and practical education is carried out in well-equipped graphics workshops and ateliers, which is guaranteed by a staff of excellent teachers. The effectiveness of the outstanding teaching activity can be measured by the students’ success at various art competitions, such as the National Scientific Students’ Associations Conferences. The environmental art education is unique in the Hungarian and European higher education, therefore this training is in the focus of an international interest.
Due to various student exchange programmes, mostly with Asian art universities, and to Erasmus scholarships, the Department provides a number of additional opportunities for students to enhance their knowledge acquired in the courses by further professional training and by international comparison.

Built on the one-year-long initial training, the specialisation in painting provides the opportunity to explore historical visual forms and visual expression possibilities and to acquire their application. The aim is, in accordance with the aspirations of contemporary art, to show the thematic and genre diversity, in addition, to strengthen independent visual thinking, as well as to launch the liberated creative mechanisms. The theoretical education of art history and aesthetics is complemented in a complex way by modern art studio work, an extracurricular lecture series and by regular participation at national and international exhibitions and in art colonies.
The training based on theoretical and practical studies shall assist students in the creation of their independent creative practice, and also allows them to become familiar with modern teaching methods. Apart from continuing their artistic creativity, they can find employment with their BA degree in various fields of art dissemination, or the basic diploma also offers them the opportunity to continue their studies in higher level MA programmes.

Based on the development of high level graphic skills, the specialisation in visual graphics emphasises the expansion of independent creative activity. In addition to learning the know-how of traditional reproduction processes and printing techniques (photogravure, relief printing, flat-printing), students also have the opportunity to carry out conceptual visual solutions. Independent problem solving skills are developed through completing practical tasks within the framework of individual or group consultations and activities. In addition to studio training, theoretical lectures on art history and on aesthetics enrich students’ knowledge.
The employment opportunities for BA-qualified students will cover a broad spectrum: in addition to an independent creative activity they can work as a book illustrator, a culture promoter or a professional who understands and communicates social, cultural and artistic issues on basic level. At the same time it is possible for them to continue their studies in MA programmes.

Nature Art seeks to restore harmony with Environment. Creative activity is based on a direct physical relationship with Nature and applies natural materials, objects, energies, locations directly. Time appears in its concrete form in the resulting, finite-life works: the creation exists at the time of the cyclic changes of Nature.
In the studio work, during the material processing courses students mainly confine themselves to craft techniques – scarf-jointing, plaiting, aligning, tying etc. – and use only a minimum of power work. In addition to studio work a part of the practical classes are held at the cave-dwellings in Noszvaj, but students also participate in a number of other artists’ colonies and environmental art events.

Teacher of Visual and Environmental Arts Masters
Students who have completed a basic (BA) programme and obtained the required qualification in our institution or in another higher educational institution may apply for this MA programme offering a teacher’s degree. Our objective is to train teachers of visual and environmental arts who have excellent art and teaching skills, thus they are able to teach all the relating subjects in the artistic and cultural areas of public education, including the disciplines of drawing, spatial design, environmental art, media literacy and art history. Accordingly, the training in this programme provides opportunities – within the framework of practical and theoretical studies – to acquire a comprehensive and high level knowledge in all these fields.
In addition, the MA programme also opens the way to active participation in fine arts research and prepares students for the doctoral programmes.
